Paintings of Virginia and Maine by Phil Carroll
July 18, 2026 to September 18, 2026

Phil Carroll sees creativity as part of our DNA and the foundation of how an artist transforms their story and interprets the world around them. He paints realistic landscapes and still lifes that inspire him, with watercolor studies en plein air, drawings, and reference photographs which help him to transform images into larger works in the studio.

Of his work, he says he does not choose his subjects, but rather they choose him,

"This notion holds some truth, as each painting represents a concept that emerges from various sources of inspiration and the chance meeting of your subject. These sources can manifest themselves at any time, in a dream, a gentle breeze, a ray of light, a falling leaf, or a fleeting movement caught in the corner of my eye.”

The paintings he creates are never copied, nor from just a single point of view or reference image. He is constantly manipulating, editing, and reshaping to improve the subject through drawing, the paint, values or the gesture of a brush stroke. If able, he will visit the same site repeatedly to familiarize himself and embed it in his minds eye. Sometimes this can be days, weeks and, in some cases, years.
