LAUREN MATSUMOTO
Lauren Matsumoto's paintings explore our relationship with the natural world through a hybrid practice that weaves painting and collage into something distinctly her own. Her Scandinavian and Northern European heritage informs a light, sophisticated palette and a modernist sensibility, while a childhood spent around birds — her grandfather was a professional bird breeder — gives her ornithological subjects an intimacy that goes beyond observation. She holds an MFA from the School of Visual Arts and a BA in Painting from Yale, and has exhibited in solo and group shows across the United States, Hong Kong, Vancouver, Tokyo and beyond. Her work is held in collections on five continents, and in 2019 she was an artist in residence at MASS MoCA.
