CABELL FARM

Founded in 1927, Camp Mont Shenandoah on the Cowpasture River is a 60 acre family owned residential summer camp exclusively for girls. On the National and State registers, the camp has been in Ann Warner’s family since 1949 and is now owned and run by Ann.  In 2010 Ann hired architect Chris Jenkins of Frazier & Assoc. out of Staunton to design a custom house for her on 33 acres of land adjoining the camp which she named Cabell Farm.  Chris worked closely with Ann to blend the inside with the out, creating a desired treehouse effect on a 50 foot bluff with the river as the “backyard” and the equestrian facility with it’s rolling pastures, built in 2001, as the delightful view to the front.  This facility was built to return the much-loved activity of horseback riding to the camp.  With soaring ceilings and intimate spaces spread over three floors, Cabell Farm is a beautifully curated contemporary home in the woods.

Owner:  Ann Warner

Directions: From the gallery, head up Courthouse hill and turn left onto 220 (Sam Snead) heading north. Just past the Warm Springs Inn turn right onto 39 heading east over the mountain. Drive approx. 13 miles to Millboro Springs and turn right onto 42. In 1.5 miles turn right into Hathaway Lane (first right after Camp Mont Shenandoah entrance).

WINDY COVE FARM

This five bay two story brick house, built by Dr. Andrew J. Wilson in the late 1850’s for his growing family, encloses a wide central passage and 4 principal rooms on each floor. Among the largest, most fashionable homes of its time in the county, this working farm remained in the Wilson family until 1966. The property sold twice more until purchased by the current owners in 2013.  Like many homes of this period built prior to indoor plumbing, electricity and climate control, Windy Cove underwent many renovations and transformations, all of which were removed from the original structure in the mid-1980’s when a sensible, architecturally designed addition was constructed. One feature never changed is the exceptional views of the Cowpasture River and the surrounding mountains enjoyed from the elevated position of the gardens and grounds.

Owners:  Witcher and Elizabeth Dudley

To Windy Cove Farm from Cabell Farm, exit Hathaway Lane and turn left onto 42 and follow to end. Turn left onto 39.  In half a mile turn left onto River Run Road. Cross bridge and follow lane to the right up to the house.
