My paintings deal with human activities which take place in the conceptual as well as the physical space between two points: the space between mind and matter, between the spoken and the unspoken, between the world as pure concept and the world as empirical fact.

Bradley Stevens was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1954 and raised in Westport, Connecticut. He attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1976, and a Masters of Fine Arts in 1979. In addition to his formal art education, Stevens spent five years copying over three hundred Old Master paintings at the National Gallery of Art. In 1982, he was invited to teach drawing and anatomy at his alma mater; in 1988, he began teaching drawing and portrait painting at Georgetown University as well. He remained a faculty member of both institutions until the year 2000.

In his career of over twenty-five years, Stevens has forged a reputation as one of America’s leading realist painters. His style is contemporary realism––rooted in classical training, yet boldly expressing modernity through his use of paint and his penetrating eye. Stevens is unique among his contemporaries for his exceptional achievements in three domains of representational art: portraiture, landscapes and figurative urban landscapes. He frequently works on commission, and many of the commissioned paintings are on a grand scale for public and private spaces.

Whether it’s something still and serene or overcome by the powers of a storm, I take from the landscape its ability to stir emotions associated with higher consciousness and self-awareness.

Chung’s works are often quite detailed, although her most essential concern is the “evocation of a mood or a feeling.” Chung also strives to encapsulate how landscape evolves over time, and this plays into her process: her method of building up paint and then scraping it off relates to the notion of the forces of erosion. The result is dramatic and highly sensorial — enough so that when Chung paints a picture of a brook, you might just think you hear it babble.

Naomi Chung is a painter and printmaker from Virginia. She has her MFA in painting from University of Pennsylvania and her BFA in painting and printmaking from Virginia Common-wealth University. She is an art educator and printmaking professor at universities such as William and Mary, VCU and Penn. Later in 2008 Chung has a solo show at Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She recently finished a solo show Fields and Flora at the McLean Project for the Arts. Chung’s work has both its content and inspiration in nature. Her abstracted landscapes are a process of layering and scraping away the paint.

The central theme of my work is the exploration of the relationships, challenges and responses to changes that characterize the human condition. Of particular interest to my project is Nsibidi, an indigenous African system of writing that employs graphic signs, and codes to convey concepts. Inspired by this ancient writings, forms in my works are reduced to basic essence resulting in new symbols or codes in script-like drawings that are used to express contemporary experiences. When combined with Nsibidi signs, these “scripts” also provide the background narrative to my compositions. Most often these narrative are better perceived when they are felt rather than read literally.

Matthew Langley was born in 1963 in Alexandria, Virginia and studied at Virginia Commonwealth University and received a BFA from The Corcoran School of Art in 1986. His work has been exhibited internationally and is included in major collections such as Ernst and Young, DC Commission for the Art and Humanities, MacAndrews & Forbes and The Doris Patz Collection (University of Maryland). Recent exhibitions include Susan Calloway Fine Art in Washington DC, The Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art and Pocket Utopia in Brooklyn, New York. Upcoming solo shows include; The Delaplaine Arts Center in Maryland and Blank Space in New York City. Mr. Langley’s artwork has been covered in publications such as Art in America, The Washington Post, and The Washington Citypaper among others. He lives and works in New York.

Beth Carltand uses a wide range of techniques and materials in her exploration of artistic expression. She combines a mastery of classic technique and an innovative view of our world, resulting in a collection of powerful works. Cartland’s primary focus is on painting and collage but she also uses found and natural object to create small sculptures.

Cartland is affiliated with galleries in Washington, DC and New York City. She has exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and in Venezuela and with the International Women’s Conference in Beijing, China. She exhibits with the US State Department and the ART in Embassies program and has shown work in Croatia and Pakistan.

Beth studied art in a variety of places from Germany to Texas, California to Rhode Island including the Rhode Island School of Design. Cartland has an MFA degree in painting from The American University. Cartland has taught art for all ages from elementary through adult including classes with the Smithsonian’s Resident Associates Program.

A character brings with it many shades of meaning and an innate power to teach. Deep within each word lies the ability to draw magic from its surroundings and history. A sentence has a secret story which lies buried within implied spaces, hidden from plain view.

Sho is much more than a simple act of communication that conveys singular and predefined messages. For me, sho is the vivid and manifold expression of characters, words and sentences. It is emerges, through our own sensibilities, and unveils the mosaic of feelings and emotions hidden within the void.

A character is alive. Within a single word or character there exists an infinite depth of differently shimmering dimensions and readings waiting to be drawn out. Although the character remains the same, the impressions that each character or word makes in our hearts is different according to the emotions they touch, the memories they bring forth, and the feelings we carry away from them.
