“When I paint a landscape, I work to reduce the scene to its essential components. Whether it’s a shape that represents a recognizable landmark or a pattern of light and shadow that obscures and reveals new depths, the elements of the painting exist in harmony to capture the mood and feeling of a particular place. I want to give my viewer what is most important in the scene in the hopes it will help quiet the mind and evoke an emotional response. Perhaps if we master this practice with a painting, we can mimic that practice in the natural world around us, slowing down to appreciate, refresh, and protect that world and all the beings who inhabit it.”
